Your local library offers a variety of events and activities for people within your community, as well as providing access to a wealth of resources and information.

Every library in Torbay is run by paid library staff, but there are lots of volunteering opportunities for people that wish to get involved and support their local library.

How to become a volunteer

If you are interested in volunteering at a library, please contact your local library to find out what roles are currently available. All volunteers will go through an interview process and successful candidates will be asked to supply details of referees. Successful applicants will be provided with training or inductions as necessary by Libraries Unlimited.

Volunteers for some roles are subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Our volunteering roles include opportunities to:

Help Children

There’s always a lot going on at Torbay Libraries for children and young people, from Music, Rhythm & Rhyme to Lego Clubs.   We often need volunteers to help out in the children’s library, supporting them to get ahead with their reading or to help out at events.

Help other library users

Help someone learn how to use a computer, help with an event or just have a coffee and a chat with some of our regular visitors.

Help out in the library

Assist people in using self-service kiosks, keep stock organised or assist with customer enquiries.

Volunteering opportunities for young people

Almost all library volunteer roles are open to applicants aged 14+, but young volunteer support for the Summer Reading Challenge is exclusively for those aged 11-16. Visit your local library to find out more about how you can get involved in the Summer Reading Challenge.
